Tower in the Desert

I worked on a programming and planning study for a new medical education building on a university campus in Arizona. The client’s program called for some unique spaces not typically found in these buildings, as well as a higher level of integration from others — for example, we conceived of a traditional library as an “information commons” that was not necessarily restricted to a single location within the building. The innovative nature of the program, and the open-ended educational challenge facing the client, invited exploration and experimentation as our team developed a prototype building template. The final building would go on to look quite different, but many of the ideas developed in this study were retained.
